RFID technology used in Las Vegas casinos

19 January 2010

The same technology that is used in contactless smart cards is also used in some Las Vegas casinos to help them track their accounts in real-time.

A feature in the January 2010 issue of Popular Mechanics examines how high technology is used in Sin City and pointed out that some facilities - including Wynn Las Vegas - are now using RFID technology in their chips.

This enables management to track money in the casino at all times and helps to prevent fraudulent chips from being used.

RFID technology has a number of other applications and is often used in toll-collection passes, corporate IDs or other contactless smart cards.

Earlier this year, the RFID Weblog noted that the technology - which is behind the sQuid contactless smart cards - can be beneficial to retailers as an inventory tool.

It pointed out that retailers who keep a regular check on stock levels can complete the process up to 80 per cent faster by using RFID technology rather than scanning barcodes.
